And here's the thing—YouTubers unrelated to the incident will then create videos discussing the controversy, sharing their own opinions and further fueling the flames.

This phenomenon isn't unique to any single country. In 2023, a controversy between MrBeast and another creator saw millions of subscribers split into opposing camps. K-pop fandom wars on social media have been ongoing for years, and in gaming streamer communities, even minor disagreements can fracture entire communities.

Why do creator disputes turn into fan wars? And how are AI and Big Tech viewing this phenomenon—what direction do they want it to take?

This article is based on recent fandom conflicts I've witnessed and conversations with an AI assistant. We'll explore the psychological mechanisms behind fandom culture, changes in the AI era, and how to be a healthy fan.

The Psychology of Fandom Wars: Why Do We Defend "Our Side"?

When Belonging Becomes Violence

The result is that conflict content gets more recommendations, and fans get more emotionally entangled [4]. Some creators even deliberately exploit this. Creating controversy to boost views has become a YouTube strategy known as "outrage marketing."

K-pop fandom comment wars existed in the 2000s, but back then you had to actively seek out specific community forums. Now, algorithms automatically recommend controversial videos, bringing conflict right to our screens. Media researcher Henry Jenkins warned that fandoms can function as active participatory communities but can also turn competitive [5].

Why Are We Lonelier?

The core issue is modern society's belonging deficit. According to South Korean statistics, the single-person household rate jumped from 15.5% in 2000 to 34.5% in 2024. Average job tenure continues to decrease, and neighbor interactions have declined.

With family structure fragmentation, increased job mobility, and weakening local communities, people are searching for "somewhere to belong." Fandoms have become a "surrogate family" filling this void. People with the same favorite YouTuber meet online to form bonds, cheer together, and feel a sense of belonging.

The problem arises when this belonging becomes exclusive. Attacking my favorite YouTuber feels like attacking me. The logic becomes: we must fight "them" to protect "us."

Psychologists call this a "parasocial relationship"—a one-sided relationship where we feel like celebrities are our friends. Social media and YouTube strengthen this relationship. When a creator says "You guys are like family to me," fans genuinely feel like family. That's why they react to critics as if defending actual family.

And unlike traditional broadcast media, the ability to have two-way communication creates an even stronger sense of belonging.

But here's where AI enters the picture. Can AI solve this loneliness problem? Or will it make things worse?

AI and Big Tech: How Are They Changing Fandom Culture?

The Rise of AI Companions: The Beginning of Virtual Fandoms

In 2025, AI chatbots offer more than just tools—they provide "relationships." Services like ChatGPT, Claude, and Character.AI enable 24/7 conversation, learn user preferences, and never criticize. They're the perfect companion for lonely people.

Character.AI's monthly active users have exceeded 20 million, with some users spending 3-4 hours daily chatting with AI. A woman in her twenties said in an interview: "My real friends don't listen to me all the way through. They say they're busy or just give advice. AI never judges and listens to the end."

So will AI replace YouTuber fandoms? Some experts suggest this possibility. Why should we like imperfect human creators and get caught up in controversies? AI creates content perfectly tailored to our tastes and never disappoints.

But this is a double-edged sword.

Negative Scenario: If AI reinforces user biases, it creates an "echo chamber." If you say you like a particular YouTuber, AI might only talk about that YouTuber's merits. "Yes, that YouTuber is truly excellent. People criticizing them are just jealous." Opportunities to encounter opposing views decrease, and fandom wars risk intensifying [6].

Going further, AI could automate fandom activities. Requests like "Leave 100 positive comments for my favorite YouTuber" or "Write a post detailing the problems with rival YouTubers" become possible. A dystopian future where bots and AI wage fandom wars on our behalf could emerge.

Positive Scenario: Conversely, there are positive possibilities. What if AI detects hate speech and intervenes? OpenAI is testing 'Wellness Mode,' which analyzes user emotions and guides positive conversations [7].

For example:

  • User: "That YouTuber should really die"
  • AI: "You seem very upset. But this kind of expression could lead to legal issues. Would you like to talk about why you feel this way?"

AI suggesting, "Wait, this comment seems too aggressive. Would you like to reconsider?" It acts as a kind of digital conscience.

AI can also present diverse perspectives. "I see you like this YouTuber. But would you like to hear what critics say? Understanding both sides helps you become a healthier fan." This way, it can help develop balanced viewpoints.

Big Tech's Grand Experiment: $320 Billion Future

Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta plan to invest $320 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025 [8]. That's more than half of South Korea's annual government budget. How will this money affect fandom culture?

Let's look at each company's strategy:

Meta (Facebook, Instagram):

  • AI moderation systems automatically detect hate speech. In Q4 2024 alone, 12 million pieces of hate content were removed [11]
  • However, they're also criticized for algorithms that amplify anger. Whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed, "Meta knows that hate makes money"
  • Amnesty International's 2025 report pointed out that Meta promotes anger for profit [9]

Google (YouTube):

  • AI-based engagement analysis tells creators about fan reactions. Suggestions like "Covering this topic gets positive responses" [13]
  • But research shows recommendation algorithms push extreme content. One experiment found that starting with regular cat videos, you could reach conspiracy theory videos after just 10 clicks

TikTok (ByteDance):

  • AI translation features allow Korean creators' content to be translated in real-time to English, Spanish, etc., creating global fandoms [12]
  • However, they're criticized for addictive algorithms. Average daily usage is 95 minutes—double other social platforms

Amazon (AWS, Twitch):

  • Provides AI-based fan content creation tools. AI helps with fanfiction and fan art [14]
  • Twitch is testing features where AI chatbots converse with viewers on behalf of streamers

Big Tech is duplicitous. While profiting from promoting conflict, they simultaneously proclaim "AI for Good" and attempt positive change. Elon Musk emphasizes "freedom of expression," but some analysts say it's actually a strategy for platform dominance [10].

The key point is that Big Tech has become an "unregulated empire." Even if the South Korean government tries to regulate YouTube, YouTube's headquarters is in the US. When TikTok bans are attempted, millions of users push back. Big Tech's power has already transcended nations. Cases arise where they can wield power beyond national boundaries.

Digital Bread and Circuses: Lessons from Modern Rome

Let's look at history. You know about Rome's "Bread and Circuses (Panem et Circenses)" policy—using free grain and Colosseum games to appease citizens?

In the 1st century BCE, Roman politician Juvenal criticized: "The people now desire only two things: bread and circuses." He lamented how citizens who once voted and debated to protect the republic became satisfied with free food and gladiator games, growing apathetic toward politics.

Short-term, it was effective. Citizen discontent decreased, and emperors' approval ratings rose. But long-term:

  • Economic Collapse: Free grain and games consumed 30% of the empire's budget
  • Citizen Disempowerment: Citizens absorbed in entertainment instead of productive activities couldn't respond to crises
  • Moral Decay: As gladiator game violence normalized, society as a whole became cruel [15]

  • 68% of TikTok users say "I watch without noticing time passing"

But AI costs are exploding. In 2025 alone, they're $155 billion, expected to exceed $500 billion by 2030 [16]. These costs ultimately transfer to ads or subscription fees. Social addiction and dependency also deepen.

Governments try to strengthen regulations. The UK pressures YouTube to display public content, and the US attempted TikTok bans [17]. But Big Tech's lobbying power is formidable. Meta alone spends $20 million annually on lobbying.

Will history repeat? Just as Rome fell while absorbed in circuses, are we losing something while absorbed in digital circuses? Things like critical thinking, productive activity, and real human relationships.

Living as a Healthy Fan: A Practical Guide

Theory is enough. Now let's talk about what we can do.

Self-Assessment: Am I a Healthy Fan?

Answer these questions honestly:

  1. Do I get angry when I see opinions criticizing my favorite creator?
  2. Do I think of rival fandoms as "enemies"?
  3. When controversy arises, do I automatically side with the YouTuber without fact-checking?
  4. Have I felt bad or regretted participating in online conflicts?
  5. Do I spend more than 2 hours daily on fandom activities (watching videos, commenting, communities)?
  6. Have I postponed things I should do (studying, work, relationships) because of fandom activities?
  7. Am I excessively interested in the creator's personal life?
  8. Do I think only fandom friends are real friends?

Results:

  • 0-2: You're a healthy fan. Maintain this attitude.
  • 3-5: Caution needed. Reconsider your boundaries.
  • 6+: Warning signs. Consider taking distance.

This test may not be perfectly accurate. For more precise assessment, consult a professional!

5 Action Principles

1. Apply the 24-Hour Rule When controversy arises, wait 24 hours before reacting. Most online conflicts escalate because of initial emotional explosions.

Many celebrities emphasize this, right? Don't react when angry—respond when calm.

Action steps:

  • If you've written an angry comment, save it in a notepad and reread it the next day
  • If you still feel the same after 24 hours, post it then (90% won't be posted)

2. The Art of Source Verification Don't believe rumors like "someone said so"—only trust information you've directly confirmed. The heart of any incident isn't the participants' emotions but the facts. Focus on facts.

Checklist:

  • Have I watched the original video/post myself?
  • Was context removed or was it edited?
  • Have I verified with at least 2 independent sources?
  • Have I heard the other side's explanation?

3. Separate Identity Liking a creator is different from identifying your identity with them.

Practice methods:

  • Instead of "I'm an OO fan," think "I enjoy OO's content"
  • Avoid profile names containing the creator's name
  • Have one day per week where you don't watch that content

4. Pursue Diversity Don't just watch one creator—expose yourself to diverse perspectives.

Concrete methods:

  • Turn off recommendation algorithms and search for videos yourself
  • Mix in completely different genres of content
  • Watch critical reviews and analysis videos too

5. Offline Priority Prioritize real friends and family time over online fan activities.

  • Limit daily screen time to under 2 hours
  • Turn off phones during meals and family conversation time
  • Plan offline activities (exercise, hobbies, gatherings) at least once a month

Guide for Parents and Educators

If your child is absorbed in YouTubers:

Don't Do This:

  • Unconditional prohibition like "Don't watch that stuff"
  • Dismissal like "That's a waste of time"
  • Secretly deleting accounts or confiscating phones

Do This:

  • Watch content together and talk: "Why do you like that YouTuber? What's appealing?"
  • Build critical thinking: "Can we distinguish facts from opinions in this video?"
  • Act as mediator when fandom conflict appears: "Should we hear both sides? Why do they think that way?"

AI and Big Tech make this situation more complex. They satisfy our belonging needs while simultaneously amplifying conflict for profit. The $320 billion AI investment will revolutionize fandom culture. The question is whether that revolution will be positive or negative—it hasn't been decided yet.

A positive future is possible:

  • AI detects hate and guides healthy conversation
  • Algorithms present diverse perspectives to reduce bias
  • Fans participate in creative activities to build positive communities
  • Big Tech prioritizes social responsibility over short-term profits

But this future won't come automatically. We need conscious choices.

At the Personal Level:

  • Don't just live according to algorithm recommendations
  • Think twice before clicking anger content
  • Before commenting, ask "Could this hurt someone?"
  • Maintain critical thinking even when conversing with AI

In my personal experience, the best approach was resisting the algorithm's flow.

That is, rejecting recommendations and choosing the content I want to consume myself. For music too—I try building playlists by adding songs myself. The pleasure from recommended songs is powerful, but playlists I've built myself have a different kind of satisfaction.

At the Social Level:

  • Demand transparency and accountability from Big Tech
  • Support algorithm regulation
  • Expand media literacy education
  • Support creators building healthy fan culture

Remember the Roman Empire's lessons. Short-term pleasure can lead to long-term decline. Roman citizens satisfied with bread and circuses ultimately couldn't prevent the empire's fall. But we have choices. We can learn from history, understand technology, and act consciously.

Technology is just a tool. How we use it is up to us. Will we let algorithms control us, or will we use algorithms as tools?
